Jessica Dishmon

My name is Jessica Dishmon, school psychologist and I aim to empower and inspire youth and women through personal development. Specifically, a personal goal of mine is to increase emotional intelligence amongst those populations so l engaged participants in a lesson on empathy at the Sakapala Community Centre in Dar es salaam, Tanzania. During the activity the youth and young adults, male and female drew shoes and completed statements with the following sentence prompt: “If you were in my shoes” , regarding what walking a mile looks like in their own. Thereafter, we discussed the patterns that surfaced during the activity which included experiencing some hardships and celebrating personal victories! The students were engaged , attentive, and were elated to share parts of their story/journey. They all brought much joy to my heart through their willingness, courage and love in letting me and others into a part of my world! Working alongside of them was the highest highlight of my day! To all of the children, youth and young adults at the Sakapala Center, remember you can always change your story, and you will!

My experience at the Sakapala Community Centre was nothing short of amazing! The students and staff were kind, caring and respectful! The activity I helped lead was the tech session where taught the theory behind coding without having to use a physical computer. The students quickly grasp the concept and we’re able to complete the three activities covering the topics of networking, encoding and encryption. Being at Sakapala Community Centre was a very amazing experience. I see a future of software engineers, IT specialists, cybersecurity analyst and much more when I see the students at Sakapala! They are definitely the future of tech!
